Get informed
✔ Before embarking on your trip, it is important to familiarize yourself with the country you will be visiting and take the time to understand its customs, norms, and traditions. The more knowledge you have, the fewer mistakes you will make and the more enjoyable your holiday will be.
✔ It is highly recommended to learn some basic rules that pertain to your travel destination. Once you are in the country, it is crucial to respect and follow its laws, rules, and social norms.
✔ If you have any uncertainties, don't hesitate to seek guidance from your tour guide or group leader.
Go green and protect Environment
✔ Hire a bike or walk whenever possible.
✔ In any case, do not harm the wildlife where you’re visiting. Do not cause any effect that may harm nature. Do not touch limestone formations or coral reefs underwater.
✔ If possible, refuse to use plastic bags. Waste management is a huge problem in developing countries.
Leave only footprints and take with you only photographs and memories. Ensure that all trash and litter is packed out for appropriate disposal. Turn off the lights, fans and air-conditioners when you leave your room. Use water sparingly.
Respect local Culture and Values
✔ Respect local traditions, customs, and sensitivities when visiting a different country.
✔ Avoid being critical or judgmental of what you see and experience, as cultural differences are what make the world diverse.
✔ Remember that you are visiting the country precisely because it is different from your home.
✔ Learn a bit of the local language – have a little notebook with some simple phrases of greeting and conversation you may use when meeting people and do not be afraid to practice them whenever possible. These will help break the ice.
✔ Please do not give money, sweets to the local people in the communities we visit or pay for the right to take photos as it creates unequal relationships between host and visitor.
✔ Never buy anything from children or give them money, sweet... They should be in school or playing, not selling or begging.
✔ Always gently ask for permission when you want to take photographs of someone on your way, especially the ethnic minority people. If they indicate that they do not want you to, then follow their wishes.
Support and Donation
✔ Support local farmers, artisans and entrepreneurs who have a considerably lower environmental footprint.
✔ It is also meaningful to support the community through local schools, clinics or development projects as this creates positive impacts on local society.
✔ Try to support local sustainable businesses, restaurants and other travel services whenever possible. By purchasing sustainable souvenirs, eating local foods and drinking local brands and brews, staying in locally run accommodations you would support the locals too.
✔ Sometimes on tour, if there is a visit to charity centers, non-profit organizations, orphanages, or natural and cultural conservation centers, you may have the opportunity to make a donation. Your contribution, separate from the tour cost, is greatly appreciated and can greatly impact the living standards of disadvantaged children/people and support meaningful projects being undertaken by the locals.
All above mentioned habits and practices are highly valued and appreciated by the locals
