PROGRAM

Overview

The Mekong Delta is a fascinating region cradled by the tributaries of its legendary river. Here, land and river merge to create the most fertile region of Vietnam. It’s a rich world brimming with diverse culture, verdant rice fields, tropical fruit orchards and where fish  abound in the rivers and canals that create this bountiful plain. It is considered to be “the rice basket” as well as the “fruit basket” of Vietnam. This itinerary grants you an ideal opportunity to adopt the pace of local life, unwind and slow down, and cycle along the flat roads of the Delta.

For anyone who wishes to extend the trip from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the Mekong River downstream package covers three main destinations of the Delta in Vietnam: Chau Doc a colorful and sleepy town near the Vietnam-Cambodia border; Can Tho, the heartland of Mekong Delta well-known for its wholesale floating market and Cai Be- a peaceful town in the heart of the Delta with friendly residents.

DAY 1 PHNOM PENH-CHAU DOC

Arrive by speedboat into Chau Doc Town at the end of the day. Situated on the border with Cambodia, Chau Doc enjoys a unique cultural mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, Cham and Khmer ethnic groups. Chau Doc's cultural diversity – apparent in the mosques, temples, churches and nearby pilgrimage sites – makes it fascinating to explore.

Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day free at leisure.

Accommodations: Hotel in Chau Doc
Meal: None

DAY 2 CHAU DOC-CAN THO

This morning travel by motorboat, a common form of local transportation, along the Chau Doc River. Stop at one of the many floating fish farms, meet the fish farmers, and see the fish being fed. After leaving the fish farm, proceed to the Cham Village (Muslim Village), with opportunities to observe the Cham People’s Culture as well as visit the Cham People’s woven fabrics. The Cham once ruled Central Vietnam, but today they’re an ethnic minority in this country, and in neighboring Cambodia. Walk through the village to see the mosque built in 1932, and notice the differences in Cham-style stilted homes and their modest, yet colorful style of dress.

Return to your hotel, check-out and depart for a three- hour land trip to Can Tho. Visit the Binh Thuy Ancient House, filled with features that represent rural areas in the Mekong Delta region during the 20th century. Built in 1870, the exterior looks French, but the interior is uniquely Vietnamese, and all five rooms are furnished with antiques. The house appeared briefly in the 1992 film The Lover, based on the novel of the same name by French author Marguerite Duras.

Travel to the outskirts of Can Tho where you will visit a Cacao Farm, meet the owner and view the whole process of creating chocolate, from bean to bar.  Sample the chocolate in all its different forms including a hot chocolate drink – after which you can take a short walk around the farm.

Check into your hotel and spend this evening free at leisure.

Accommodations: Hotel in Can Tho
Meal: None

DAY 3 CAN THO-CAI BE-HO CHI MINH CITY

Wake up in the early morning and board a local boat to visit the Cai Rang Floating Market. This is the largest floating market in the Mekong Delta, also the most popular one due to its location and accessibility. The waterway turns into a maze of hundreds of boats jostling for position: at present, the Mekong Delta comprises 25,000 km (15,534 mi) of rivers and canals which are used daily by 500,000 vessels of all sizes.

One of the more interesting activities to watch is the traditional “pole offering” used in trading: because there are so many boats, local sellers are forced to hang their fruits and vegetables on a long bamboo pole. As this is early morning, many floating boats offer breakfast to sellers and even visitors. Have your camera ready as this vibrant wholesale market on the water makes for excellent photo opportunities, especially from the unique vantage point of your boat

You will be driven one and a half hours to Cai Be Town.  Situated in the heart of the Mekong Delta, Cai Be is famous for its tropical fruit gardens and traditional handicrafts.

Upon arrival, board your private wooden boat and start cruising on the Mekong River while sampling local tropical fruits on board. Disembark and trade the boat for a bicycle for a leisure ride on off-the-beaten track village paths. Take the opportunity to visit local families that make traditional products such as rice-net for spring-rolls, sewing coconut-leaves and local hats…

Lunch with Mekong Delta specialties is served at a local house before a sampan ride along the narrow canals of the Mekong River. After a fond farewell to your crew,  you will be driven to Ho Chi Minh City. Check into your hotel and spend the evening free.

Notes:
The cycling distance is around 4-5 km (2.4-3mi), depending on your physical ability and duration you desir
