Overview

The Mekong Delta is a fascinating region cradled by the tributaries of its legendary river. Here, land and river merge to create the most fertile region of Vietnam. It’s a rich world brimming with diverse culture, verdant rice fields, tropical fruit orchards and where fish abound in the rivers and canals that create this bountiful plain. This 2-day itinerary will take you to Tra Vinh Province where hundreds of years ago, Khmer people came and lived in harmony with Vietnamese people despite having different traditions and lifestyles. In fact, Khmer civilization and culture flourished in Tra Vinh and then around the Mekong Delta in the 11th and 12th centuries. The Khmer influence is evident as there are over 140 Khmer pagodas in Tra Vinh province, as opposed to 50 Vietnamese pagodas. The schools located inside those pagodas teach the Khmer language. Most of the locals in Tra Vinh can read and write Khmer at least as well as Vietnamese. There is also a small, but active Chinese community in Tra Vinh, one of the few remaining in the Mekong Delta region.

DAY 1 HO CHI MINH CITY-TRA VINH

Early morning departure from Ho Chi Minh City for a three- and- a- half-hour drive to Cau Ke, an off-the-beaten track town of the Mekong Delta where the Khmer community has been living for a long time. Escape the high-energy of Ho Chi Minh City for a day of exploring sprawling rice paddies and colorful fruit farms.

Upon arrival in Cau Ke Town, you will be welcomed by your hosts. Check into your homestay. Take advantage of this homestay experience by conversing about local life and traditions with your friendly, welcoming hosts.

After lunch, be ready for an easy ride through a peaceful village to observe the rustic lifestyle while riding among fruit plantations and friendly locals. Stop at the Ba Mi Pagoda, built in 1364 by Khmer people. Then continue through to the Khmer villages of Canh Dal and Tra Khao, where you will stop at Canh Dal Pagoda (built in 1317) and Sam Bua Pagoda (built in 373). Make a quick stop at the Giong Lon hamlet, where you will witness local farmers working on their rice paddies or local gardeners growing vegetables or fruit.

Return to your homestay and help your host prepare dinner.

DAY 2 TRA VINH-HO CHI MINH CITY

After breakfast, visit the Cau Ke Market where huge varieties of produce are placed in multicolored tubs on the ground, and flower stands reveal colorful buds of an immense variety. Coconuts are a popular sell; watch women removing the hard shell with a machete. Sample a Vietnamese traditional cake or a grilled banana wrapped in sticky rice. See the outside of the colonial house built during French occupation period. Afterward, check out of your homestay and drive back to Ho Chi Minh City.
